Chapter Twenty-Three
Lilliana
The next morning Lucy, Rose, Georgia, Jacinta, and I pile into the back of the stretch limousine my father sent for us, for our girlsâ weekend. I am beyond excited as this will be my first ever girlsâ weekend. Not having many friends at the castle and not being allowed out meant making friends had been kind of hard. The maids tried to keep me company, but they had to do their jobs too. So more often than not I was left on my own.
âOkay, so how far is your castle from the academy?â Rose asks, a look of concern on her face.
Clearly, she hasnât researched where my home is. I chuckle, causing her strawberry coloured brows to furrow.
âWhat? What am I missing?â she asks, looking around at the others.
âThe limo will drive us outside the gates, where we will then drive through a portal and straight into the castle grounds. The limo is more for show, type of thing. My father doesn't want me walking outside the academy gates in case we get attacked. Again.â I explain watching her face fill with bewilderment.
âSo basically, we will be at your castle in the blink of an eye?â
I nod. âYep, pretty much.â I confirm.
They all stare at me like it's the most amazing, unheard of thing ever. I think about it and realise that for everyone outside the royal circle it is. To open a portal, you need experienced mages who know what they are doing, and they need to be paid to make it happen. I guess being a royal, I just kind of expect certain things that aren't quite the norm for others.
I feel a twinge of guilt that these things that are everyday occurrences to me are so strange and new to my friends. The differences between us are a lot bigger than most people realise, more than I realised, until coming to the academy.
On the outside, a princess's life looks perfect, like we get everything, but itâs a lie everything comes at a cost. A cost that we have to pay for daily, not that anyone sees. I quickly push those thoughts away before they can bring down my mood and place them back in a box in my mind to be looked over at another time. Or never. Never would be better.
As we approach the gates, the girls climb into the front seat together and press their faces up against the windows, eager to get a good view of the portal. I smile, happy to be able to show them something new. The wonder of portal travel left me a very long time ago. Most visits to other castles are done through portals. It leaves us less open to attack, as well as allowing us to travel instantly. Meaning we can return to our castle the same day we left. When youâre royal and assassinations and death threats are a thing, it makes life a little safer; and being stuck in a confined space with your family for too long can take its toll.
